Congress leader booked for murders, thefts externed for two years

Local Congress leader Akbar Hussain Safi Shaikh (42), whose wife is a Mumbai corporator and ward committee chairperson, was Wednesday externed from Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai for the next two years. Police said Shaikh had 16 cases against him, including murder, attempt to murder, robbery and car theft. The order was issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone VI) Sangramsinh Nishandar on May 4.

Shaikh’s wife Khairnusa Akbar Hussain is the chairperson of the ward committee for M (East) ward. Shaikh had contested the 2014 Assembly elections on a Peasants and Workers Party ticket. In October 2015, Shaikh and his wife switched over to the Congress. Shaikh is currently the chairman of the transport wing of the Mumbai Congress, a position he was given a month ago. Mumbai Region Congress Committee president Sanjay Nirupam was unavailable for comments.

According to the police, there are cases across the country and the city registered against Shaikh, and more than 16 cases have been registered against him between 1994 and 2016. “The last case against Shaikh was regarding a car theft, registered at Juhu police station. Shaikh was externed earlier for a year but had returned. He was warned to not get booked again but has had several cases,” said a senior police officer.

Hussain was arrested by the Juhu police for reportedly paying Rs 7 lakh for a red Pajero to an agent from Bengaluru that allegedly belonged to a Bombay High Court advocate. Shaikh also has a case registered against him in Karnataka on charges of stealing sandalwood.
